According to Thanh Nguyen the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Sympathizer,” many books are being tarnished by so called good hearted and moralistic people who perceive the subject matter of the books to be unsettling for their children. In some cases, a trend of censorship is developing to limit books not only for a parent’s child but for all children. The history of Black History month began in 1926, when historian Carter G. Woodson sponsored a national Negro History week, which took place during the second week of February, in honor of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas’s birthdays.
In 1976, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month because he believed, Black History informs all US Citizens of the often-neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our country’s history.
